Measuring Lawn Mower Belts

I purchased an old lawn mower at a yard sale a few weeks ago. I knew it wasn’t working but I didn’t realize just what kind of shape it was in. I need several  replacement parts, including a belt because to my surprise, there isn’t one to remove! How do I determine what size or style I need? Is there a way to use a substitute for measuring Lawn Mower Belts, like a rope, that will give me an accurate length and width in order to buy a replacement? Or should I not waste the time and money and scrap the whole project?
